Raja Phanna Upkari

Photobucket

Whts Raja? Its'nt a King don worry.. he he Raju/Mackral is a fish variety…. All u myt be wondering fish recipe in my blog after so long time………. Yeh it took so long for me to prepare fish for “my hubby”. He loves it very much….Mayi(MIL) always says ‘jalke majjar tho eke k vala’ (he is a fish cat sometimes)…… As I m a vegetarian my hubby wasn’t so comfortable of getting fish at home……. So this time he asked me if he cud get nd I never said a NO….. Nd he was happy so he added to it asking if u will prepare it for me … Huh me? Il just prepare the gravy…… rest all u have to do thts wht I said. Nd then he cleaned the fish cut them nd I prepared Raja Phanna Upkari – this is a Amchi(Konkani) Fish recipe…. Which I took from poonam’s blog but I have made a some changes…. Thank u Poonam for the recipe as I never even had the idea of phanna upkari. Hey hey one more thing I really donno y is it called upkari when there is gravy in it…. If ne body knows or comes to kno plz do let me kno :)

Without wasting lo of time here’s the recipe:
Raju/Mackral Fish- 1 large cleaned nd cut into 4 pcs( I used only 1 as it was only for 1).
Onions- 1 large (1/2 for gravy nd ½ finely chopped for seasoning)
Corriander seeds -2tbsp
Methi-1/4th tsp
Garlic- 2 pods
Ginger- 1” pc
Long red chillies -10 (though I used these many it wasn’t spicy at all so used a green chilli too but still it dint turn hot as the long chillies rnt so spicy)
Coconut oil – 1/2tbsp+1/2 tbsp+1tbsp
Lemon sized tamarind ball
Salt to taste

For the paste:
In a small pan heat 1/2bsp oil fry coriander seeds, methi seeds,nd red chillies nd let it cool for a minute.
Grind these with ½ onion, garlic, ginger into a very fine paste.

Now for the phanna upkari recipe:
In a pan heat ½ tbsp oil add the ground paste and fry until raw smell flies off in the air.
Once done add water, salt to taste and make it into a semi thick gravy and get a bubble boil.
When its bubbling bubbling add the cleaned nd cut fish and boil for 5 minutes and close it with a lid nd switch off.

For seasoning:
Heat 1tbsp oil add the chopped onions nd fry till crisp season this on the upkari.

Here is a delicious recipe for Fish Lovers….

My Hubby’s Verdict after eating this:
Hmmmmm Bhari Laik jalla swalp theek une( it has tasted Awesome but lil less spicy)
Next time when u prepare it for me make it a more spicy as it is fish not a veggie ;)
Good tht u learnt to cook fish though never ate it or touched it. It really tasted yumm though u prepared for the first time.
Pack the remaining 3 pieces for my lunch tommoro as I want to relish them as they get more tastier next day.

My Verdict after preparing:
Good I never touched fish but still prepared it nd my hubby loved it.
I will surely try to touch a fish soon……

P.S : Adjust the spices according to the qtty of fish I have just dropd here a recipe for 1 fish.

Hey Aparna..first time here. While reading through your post,I felt like reading my own experience.Hubby is a staunch non-veg whereas I am a pucca veggie.I started preparing fish for him in a similar way,but now I am comfortable *touching* the fish, chicken etc;).Hubby isn't too fond of Raju,so I haven't tried making phanna upkari.I make Alle piyav ghashi always, easier and quicker.

Loved reading through your post and loved reading the Konkani dialogues;)
